of Ada Apa Dengan Cinta

Assalamualaikum and Hi,

What’s good in 2002? Brazil took the World Cup, Avril Lavigne with tank top and tie ( I still don’t get this), Eminem in 8mile and of course Ada Apa Dengan Cinta (AADC)- my favored movie.

What you are about to read will be based on personal idea and pardon me for any wrong information as I have I short knowledge on music and film.

AADC is one of my bes loved film and when I heard there will be sequel, really? After 14 years? What took them so long? The movie was a starting point for me to know about the entertainment from our neighboring country.

What I love the most about the movie is the fact that it was very new, fresh to my teenagehood. The school uniform, music...language and I think that was the first time I learned on poetry book. I mean I know on poetry, poem and stuff. But poetry book in our identical mother tongue was quite new to me. Another thing is the ending of the movie which was unlike the typical romance theme. They admitted their feelings, parted and he left her with a poem.

Cinta was such a unique name. Suddenly everybody wanted to name their daughter with name like Cinta, Indah, Purnama. And Rangga… come on, come on. Although the big bob, curly hair wasn’t ideal back then, but let us admire the character and mono-expresssion. He was a hottie in that movie. He still is in the sequel. Even better.

Because of this movie, we know about Melly Goeslaw, a singer with soft? voice and poetical lyric. As a matter of fact, the first song I heard was in 2000. It was the last day of UPSR camp and we were asked to perform a song. So one of the group did a choir like of “Jika”. Of course I was “Apa benda la ko nyanyi ni”, can we just go with Westlife or Britney. Probably “Jika” was like hipster enough in that year kan.

The sequel of AADC was great. The dialogue, the poem, New York, Yogyakarta, Titi Kamal still looking good. Well... I am not going to spoil the story here. Go and watch it!

Can we take the next 12 minutes to watch this great discussion between Nicho and Dian. I really really really like this video. They were talking casually about their characters but it was such a rich conversation. The place looks good and the interaction is appealing. They pulled off this conversation on dessert, music, daily life captivatingly. I don't know talking about chocolate cake could sounds so smart. This is something to live for. We need more of this kind of face to face communication.

The next paragraph includes some of the words and terms to help understanding their dialogue. The language used include Indonesian and English. (according to video timeline)

dessert, analogi, flourless, black forest, Kwitang (toko buku AADC), dipalak (diganggu), tipe (type), black coffee, espresso, filtered, hipster, sophisticated, detail, drip, french press, perfectionist, mainstream, league of her own, crème brule, torch, Valrhona chocolate, Guanaja, 70an, aktivis, angkatan ganyang, orde baru, Jimmy Hendrix, popular request, gaul, kemamanan (bebas?), Soe Hok Gie (aktivis, penulis), humanist, control freak, textbook, narrow minded, abu-abu (kelabu), order, anomaly, chaos, anxious, process oriented, gonjang-ganjing (kacau?), consumerism, electric music, The Beatles, Jazz, Sergio Mendes, multi-cultural, assimilated.

This is the one of the soundtrack from AADC 2. Enjoy!

Sekian la sesi merepek-merepek di malam minggu.

Thank you and bai.

omg, 14 years! I remembered watching it too when I was little but as I am a sucker for a happy ending, the ending was quite frustrating,, now fourteen years back, I am now scared to give it a try because I heard that it took him a whole fourteen years to come back to her (for what purpose, that's a mystery I am scared to discover) :3
