Yogyakarta (Jogja) : Mount Merapi (must visit)

Assalamualaikum and hi.

I'm going to wrap up my Yogyakarta (Jogja) trip in this post. If there is one must visit place that I can recommend that would be the Mount Merapi. I love everything about it and would love to visit it again with my friends (because if I bring my mum, she could suffer a backpain after that).

Taking an off road jeep to Merapi is a must do. A 90 minutes ride will cost you 350000rp. A jeep could fit in up to 5 people. If you are up for an adventure, enjoying scenery on really bumpy road, I suggest you take longer ride. Renting a motorbike is one of the option as well.

The guide will take you to some scenic spots and don't hesitate to ask them to take photos. They were more willing to help us and they got some skills! Ask local myth, belief, ritual and approached it with respect.

When we were there, the merapi mountain was not in its fullview. It was cloudy, a bit chilly and windy. It could get very dusty, so bring mask if you need to. Attire is fine with anything comfortable, preferably shoes. But I gasak wearing flip flops.

A volcanic area has always been in my to-do-list. Disaster can be beguiling, don't you think so? War zone, Pompeii or Anne's Frank house.

I kinda sound like a stony hearted person, insensitive to the casualties and grief that this disaster has impacted.  But real talk, natural or human caused catastrophe has a way to mesmerize me.

is it bad to be so much in love with a disaster?

Quick tips:
1. Tourism places in Jogja is quite far from one another. Especially the famous one (Prambanan, Parangtritis etc). So if you hire a guide in a day, the most you could visit is 3 to 4 places. Unless your driver drive like alonso.
2. Entrance fee to Borobudur and Prambanan is expensive and not included in your guide's cost. 250000rp per person. Unless you are trying to sneak in as a local. Practice Jowo dulu sebelum masuk.
3. Bak pia is a famous souvenir. It's a local delicacy. Kuih ni sedap!
4. Peak season is during Hari Raya. Traffic and over flooded local tourist.
5. The souvenir stalls in Malioboro offer more or less the same price. Savae your time from barigaining too much.

So, if you are interested to explore Jogja, so many options waiting for you, beach, market, volcano, culinary, forest, temples and new booming places.
